Vietnam has huge potential for the development of third generation (3G) technology, though it is lagging behind some other regional countries, said the Head of Ernst & Young’s Global Telecom Centre Jonathan Dharmapalan.
At a seminar held in Hanoi on Nov. 6, examining the opportunities and challenges offered by 3G technology development in Vietnam, the official also recommended that Vietnamese enterprises pay due attention to 3G marketing and promotional activities along with increased investment in infrastructure.
According to Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Le Nam Thang, the recent rapid development of information technology and communications has offered Vietnam an opportunity to create a legal framework to lay the foundation for the development of 3G technology.
The Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) is preparing to grant licenses to four 3G service providers next year, aiming to boost the development of technology infrastructure and offer a new range of value-added services.
According to the MIC, over recent years, Vietnam has proven itself one of the world’s fastest-growing telecom developers. By the end of October, the total number of telephone subscribers in the country amounted to 70.9 million, including 60 million mobile phone subscribers.
Vietnam is now home to 21 million Internet users, accounting for 23 percent of the total population, with 6.4 million internet subscribers.
